Books – My fascination.. My Obsession..

I am an ardent reader. I love reading books. When am happy, when am not so happy. They have been with me through every phase of my life. Throughout 24 years, I have tried to read all genres of books. Romance, Action, Thriller, Scientific fiction, Medical fiction, Classics, Non Fiction etc. I enjoy a mixed pot of genres, but, my favorites are Action and Thrillers. When am reading a book, I get so consumed in it that I am completely lost in it and can’t stop till I finish it. There have been nights when I sit hell bent to finish a particular book not even bothering to sleep.

My 1st book ever was “Sun Princess” in 2nd Std. I was so excited when I got this book as a gift from my Dad on my Birthday, that I did not even change in the night and sat with it, reading aloud the words and trying to string the story together. It was an Irish Fable and the story was absolutely fantastic to me. I remember it even now. :)

Even before that, in my Kindergarten, my teacher used to give us story books on a Friday and used to ask our Moms to narrate the stories to us. And then we had to present the story on Monday in front of the class. I still remember how excited I used to be on every Friday. Mom and I used to finish the story in the lunch time itself.

Then, after Sun Princess, I gained confidence and started reading on my own. I slowly started with Panchatantra, Tinkle, Chandamama etc. Then as I grew up, Famous Five, Secret Seven and other Enid Blytons started making place on my desk.

Nancy driving her Blue Mustang with her best friends Bess and George…Aaaah…Nostalgia. Many of us have grown up on Nancy Drew stories. The twisted cases, her crushes, her friends, they all created a parallel world for my young brains. Then Sidney Sheldons, the John Grishams were all waiting for me to read them. I read all the Harry Potters and started reading other fantasy books like Eragon, The Golden Compass etc.

Since then I have tried a lot of books. Some of them which really touched my heart are: Godan, Memoirs of a Geisha, Abduction and a lot more. Every book, when well written, creates an entirely different world. I can live as one of the characters. I can roam on the streets of London when am lounging on my couch. I can fight with the dragons when am actually travelling in a bus. There is so much to learn and so much more to experience.

Currently I am reading “Dead like you” by Peter James about a Psychotic serial rapist and a killer who is obsessed with branded and high heeled shoes. It’s very scary because, the victim in this story is just another girl. It could be me, you anyone. A girl who thinks all bad things happen to others. It’s quite a big book and I want to finish it as soon as possible.

So, if you have read a book that you think I should read, do not forget to recommend it to me :)

Where can i hide my face???

After yesterday’s successful start, I am super charged to write more and more. Till I run out of ideas and lose interest.

My day started off in a quite boring way. I got up and left home. Got into the AC Bus and slept off. When I got off at Worli Naka and was rushing to my office, (I was damn late!!), an old man called out to me. Now, I had my earphones on with loud music and hence could not hear what he said. I anyway thought he must be a beggar and ignored him. This man followed me…Crossed the road with me….I thought, Oh my god! He is one hell of a stalker beggar. I ran faster….he limped faster…this really made me curious. I stopped and turned to him. He said, “Tai tumcha daha rupaiye neeche padle” (Which means…Sister…you dropped your 10 Rs.)

My face flushed with embarrassment. I felt like shit. I took the money from him sheepishly. Thanked him and walked away feeling extremely stupid. Imagine that man was so nice that he actually followed me to give me my money back.

I think its ok. Perfectly fine! Everyone has such embarrassing moments.

Ok…This reminds me of another such shameful incident. I am sure all of us know how crowded the Local train stations in Mumbai are at peak hours. The crowd spills out of the station and pushes its way to the auto rickshaw stands. Now, I am walking along with the crowd to the auto stand and am walking on a path way. The pathway is flanked by shops with their merchandise overflowing on it. I have my earphones on again..with Hinder yelling and singing to me that I deserve much better than him. Anyway…so I am basically walking lost in my own world. Suddenly, I stop..the guy in front of me is not moving. So, I just say..”Excuse me”. He does not move. I am still in my own world and say “Excuse me!!” He does not move again. I get slightly irritated and raise my volume and say” Excuse me..can’t you hear?? I said excuse me!!!!” Then, a noble boy who was walking next 2 me…pats me on my shoulder and says..Dear..you are talking to a Mannequin……………………….

Oh shit!!! People around me start laughing. My face turns to a deep shade of red. I am embarrassed!! I want to run away. A girl sniggers at me. An old man looks at me as if am schizophrenic. And a mom tells her daughter to be away from people like me….Lolz…I feel so ashamed that I run away. Don’t even take an auto. Just walk my way till home.

So, do let me know if you also have any such stories which will make me feel better and less stupid. :)

I guess that’s it for today…more stories to share in the days to come…

My 1st time……

Hey everyone......I am personally shocked that I am writing a blog....my very own blog!! Lolz... Anyone who knows me, will know how extremely lazy I am and will just laugh on the very thought of me writing a blog. But, hey here I am. Actually, I love writing, but, the only problem with me is, my thoughts run at super sonic speed. So fast, that my pen / typing can not keep up with the speed...

So, I was thinking what my 1st blog should be about..when it struck me….My 1st time….lolz….

1)      My 1st Fight: My mom tells me this story. Even now she finds it hilarious.

Year: 1990
Place: Mumbai
Background: Fancy Dress competition (I was Bharat Mata!)
Scene: One fellow, he had dressed up as a milk man. I won the 1st prize. He did not like it. So, he hit me with a spoon. I got angry and I pushed him. He fell on a bench and hurt his head. Hahahahah…..
Conclusion: He never messed with me thereafter. Lolz…

2)      My 1st Prize:  Was 1st in Elocution competition in Jr. KG. My topic was “War and Peace”. And you know what I spoke?? Some by hearted shit written by my Dad and then sang Saare Jahaan se Achcha… Hindustan Hamaara…..and I won a Top Cat Comic book. Man I was patriotic….Bharat Mata and then this…..lolz…
3)      My 1st Lie: I never lie!!! Lolz…. You think I’l even remember this???!!!
4)      My 1st Crush: I would have admired a lot of guys in my early years, but, my 1st serious crush was in 7th Std. This guy was my senior and I thought he was the ultimate guy! I was head over heels in love with him. But, you know how crushes end. We shifted and thus ended my 1st crush!
5)      My 1st Kiss: Well I am not telling you this…hahahahha….
6)      My 1st Mobile: My 1st Mobile was an LG piece. (Don’t remember the handset no.). But, it was a silver color phone. I was so ecstatic when my dad gifted it to me on my 15th B’day. I was a proud owner of a mobile phone!!!!
7)      My 1st Drink: Was a Vodka shot…..when?? I guess it’s been a while…don’t even remember…hahahah….
8)      My 1st Failure: Yes, I got an ATKT once, in Economics. I hated that subject! And plus I was working then I did not study at all. I felt so ashamed that I studied hard and then passed out with flying colors.
9)      My 1st Job: Arrrggggghhhhh…..was my worst experience. I had got a job after my Grads in a Consulting firm as an HR Executive. My work sucked, my boss sucked more….I hated it sooooooooooooooo much that I resigned in the 1st month itself. But that stupid boss did not accept my resignation and hence, i had to abscond!
10)  My 1st Salary: Was very less….but I still bought gifts for my Mom, Grandmom and both of my Grandpas

So, here it is. A small snapshot of my life. I’ve been weird. And have done a lot more weirder things.
Shall update soon. Do let me know if you like it. Join me…Follow me…and make me feel important.
Hahahah….

PS. This blog is dedicated to Ms. Madhuvanti Mohan....my esteemed colleague...from whom I learn and unlearn so many things. If it was not for her, my blog would have never existed!!!
